Send Jake to Shakespeare Camp!

Hi there, it's Jake.  Jake Merriman for those that don't know me.  For the past 5 years I've been working with high school age kids on performing the works of William Shakespeare, both in class room settings and directing them in his plays.  It's been an incredible experience and I'm looking at leveling up my game!

I'm raising money to do a month long intensive training at Shakespeare and Company.  There I will be spending 12 hours a day, 6 days a week delving into all aspects of performing Shakespeare including text analysis, Alexander Technique, Linklater vocal training, stage fight, clown work, music in Shakespeare, sonnet and scene work and more.  This is a highly reputable company internationally recognized that will offer a more immersive Shakespeare training than I could get at any graduate school.

The program costs $4500 (all though I received a $750 scholarship, so really $3750).  I'm asking for tuition, airfare (about $750), and compensation for work loss for a month (about $1500).  Any additional funding will be used as an emergency back up fund, and will go towards gift compensation (stationary, space rental, etc.) for y'all.

The program begins the end of December so I've got to get this party started!  I hope to have funding completed by December 1st.

This will greatly enhance my career as a teacher artist by giving me many more training tools to add to my curriculum. Over the last few years I've developed a teaching program that focuses on kids being able to understand and communicate Shakespeare's language to an audience, but this training will give me many other aspects of Shakespeare that I can teach such as Shakespearean clowns, songs, dances and fights. I'll be able to build out my curriculum into a fuller package of skill sets that will make me more desirable to schools and arts organizations as well as for longer contracts. This will also help me immensely in breaking into the acting and directing community in Portland. As an actor it will develop my skills to become an asset for companies doing classical work as well as giving me a great boost to my resume for seeking out directing work for Shakespeare. There is no shortage of opportunity for creating and teaching Shakespeare's work that this training can provide.

With a minimal amount of exposure of Shakespeare in undergraduate school and a lot of self teaching, I’ve been able to gain enough information to teach and direct Shakespeare, but I’ve never had training near the level this opportunity will provide.  The depth of knowledge and training will push my abilities, experience and opportunities to levels well beyond my imagination.  I’m passionate about creating theater with Shakespeare’s text and showing audiences and students why his work is as relevant today as it was 400 years ago as well as 400 years from now.  This is the best opportunity from a renowned company to transform my work into something exciting, impactful, visceral and poignant.  Many years ago I set out to show people how Shakespeare’s work can impact their lives, and I’ve seen no better opportunity to get me to that place.

I've never felt a need to create a bucket list until I learned about this program.  Now it's one item deep.  If you support this you'll be doing nothing less that making  a life dream come true.  I don't have the words to express the gratitude I would feel from that... but I know someone who does!

Thou thought'st to help me; and such thanks I give
As one near death to those that wish him live.
