My name is Danielle Shandiin Emerson. I'm a Diné woman from Shiprock, NM, currently based in Providence, RI. My clans are Tłaashchi’i (Red Cheek People Clan), born for Ta’neezaahníí (Tangled People Clan). I have a B.A. in Education Studies and a B.A. in Literary Arts from Brown University. I write fiction, poetry, plays, and creative essays. My work centers Diné culture, perspectives, and personal narratives. I’m the 2023-2024 Associates of the Boston Public Library Writer-in-Residence.
At Tin House, I’ll be working a heartfelt collection of YA short stories detailing contemporary Diné life and culture. Each story is inspired by a unique experience, image, name, and/or memory, drawing from a place of home—wherever that may be. Ahéhee' (Thank You).
LILY (BRINGS WATER) PAINTER (Kiowa/Winnebago)
Brings Water, knowing also by her English name as Lily Painter (22) is a Kiowa/Winnebago poet, writer, and filmmaker from the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache land reservation in Anadarko, Oklahoma. In 2020 she was selected by the Center for Native American Youth to attend the prestigious Columbia University writing program workshop on a full scholarship. Her poetry debut was published in ‘BlackList Me’ (Chapter House LA). She also was a recipient of a Scholastic Writing Award, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, for the excellence and writing of her personal essay & memoir. She is pursuing her creative writing degree at the University of Oklahoma. At Tin House she will be studying under Oregon Poet Laureate, Anis Mojgani, to complete her first full length poetry collection. She is the co-coordinator and graphics lead for NDN Girls Book Club, a nonprofit that aims to make access to quality literature a reality for Native communities.

Cheyenne Williams is a student in Colorado majoring in writing. She is a member of the Navajo Nation and grew up in Virginia. Her work has appeared in Yellow Medicine Review and Saw Palm: Florida Literature & Art.
At Tin House Workshops, I will be workshopping some recent poems I have written that I hope will further be created into a full length manuscript in the future. My workshop instructor will be Natalie Diaz.
