Gurpartap Singh came to Canada in 2018 with great aspirations, like any other young and willing student seeking to carve a successful life in this great country. Being the only child he held the beacon of hope and carried the promise of a better future for his parents back in India.
He hailed from a small village in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. His family is of meagre means and, they had to sacrifice a lot in terms of financial security to send him on what they believed a path to prosperity overseas.
In spite of his best intentions Gurpartap struggled adapting to his new life and circumstances in Canada. One of gentle temperament and sharp mind, when facing academic adversity and other challenges that many international students encounter, he went down a path of isolation and self deprivation. Even with his well wishers on his side he couldn't be redeemed from a position of deteriorating mental capacity.
On the evening of 25th Feb, Gurpartap took his own life. He was found 2 days hence by fellow students in the garage of the home they rented together. There is no justifiable explanation for this act of extreme tragedy, but the fact remains his parents lost their only child thousands of miles away in a place they thought would yield happiness.
The least his parents deserve now is a last chance to view the lifeless corpse of their son and give him an honorable and customary departure from this world.
His body now awaits the final journey back home.
