Send Fulton Quiz Bowl To Nationals

Donation protected
For the fifth consecutive year, Fulton has qualified for the Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT)  in Rosemont (near Chicago), Illinois.  Fulton earned this automatic bid at the Hicksville Invitational   that was held in Hicksville, Ohio in November.

Fulton is a small, rural school district in central Michigan.  This year our high school enrollment is 176 and 75% of our students are considered at-risk.  This opportunity for our students provides returning team members a chance to expand their experience and allow new team members the opportunity to experience a large cultural center of our country.  Last year Fulton competed in the three most prestigious national tournaments a small school could compete in. The highlight of national play was finishing 3rd among small schools at the National Scholastic Championship in Washington DC.

Our plan is to leave for Rosemont the Thursday before the tournament.  We will get to our hotel that night and take the train into Chicago to visit museums and other attractions on Friday.  That night will involve scrimmages against teams from across the country before competing for the Small School National Championship on Saturday.  If we qualify for Sunday's playoff round, we will compete Sunday as well. If we fail to qualify, we will visit more attractions Sunday before returning home.  Funds will be used for hotel rooms, registration, food, admission to attractions, and travel.

The varsity and JV teams will attend the tournament.  Currently only the varsity, or "A" team, will compete.  However, the JV or "B" team may enter the tournament as a stand-by team if for some reason the field is not full for the tournament or they qualify at a tournament later this year.

Team members are:

Elizabeth Leslie.  Elizabeth is a freshman and first time quiz bowl player.  She played this season on the JV team.

Austin McIntyre.  Austin is a junior and second year quiz bowl team member.  He was second on the varsity team in scoring during our league's regular season.  Last year Austin earned a starting spot on the A team after league play was completed.

Ella Prichard.  Ella is a freshman and first year quiz bowl player.  Ella finished first on the team in JV scoring and was the tenth highest scoring JV player in the league this year.  When our team was shorthanded at the Hicksville Invitational, she filled in on the A team.

Maddie Rattay.  Maddie is a senior and four year quiz bowl team member.  Maddie earned a starting position this year on varsity.

Katey Salogar.  Katey is a senior and four year varsity starter.  Katey is also the captain for the third consecutive year.  Katey has been the team's and league's highest scoring player for the past three years.  This year Katey became the all time scoring leader in Fulton quiz bowl history. Last year Katey was invited to and participated in the Individual Player National Championship Tournament (IPNCT).  At last year's SSNCT, Katey was the 44th highest scorer out of 432 scorers. This year she was named All Tournament First Team at the Hicksville Invitational.

Kamrey Sherrick.  Kamrey is a senior this year and competing in quiz bowl for the first time.  Kamrey is on the varsity team.

Kylan Smelker.  Kylan is a freshman this year and is a first time quiz bowl player.  Kylan competed this year on the JV team.

Anne Kate Sprowl.  Anne Kate is a sophomore and is competing for the second year in quiz bowl on the JV team.  This year she led the JV team in scoring until illness forced her to miss the second half of the season.

Laine Sprowl.  Laine is a junior on the varsity team competing in quiz bowl for the second year this season.  Last year Laine earned a starting spot on the A team after league play was completed.

Kristin Wedel.  Kristin is a sophomore and new to Fulton this year.  This is her first year competing in quiz bowl. Kristin was named Tournament Honorable Mention in the Hicksville tournament where she competed on the B team.

This year the varsity team won their 6th consecutive league title.  The JV went 5-9, while missing their leading scorer due to illness for half the season.   Both teams have several more tournaments they will compete in. The A team continues to prepare for the Michigan High School State Championship and Small School National Championship Tournaments.

The team would appreciate all donations by April 20, 2020.  The team will depart Fulton for Rosemont on April 23 after school and return to Fulton the night April 26.
