Hello! I'm Emma Surdilla, a high school junior, euphonium player, and drum major at James Logan High School in Union City, California. Music has become an integral part of my daily life. I've loved playing euphonium since sixth grade, and it brings me happiness like nothing else. I have been able to make endless progress in my music career due to support from my family, my teachers, my school, and my community.
This year, I've been fortunate enough to be accepted to the Interlochen Center for the Art Summer Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. This world-renowned summer camp allows students to be exposed to an immersive musical experience. Students audition from all over the country and the world.
I'm honored to be accepted into the six-week High School Wind Symphony Program. During those six weeks (June 22- August 5), I would be in an environment where I can be exposed to other students with the same passion that I have, and experience performance in six concerts at different venues with new challenging repertoire each week.
This experience would be an amazing privilege and would be extremely beneficial in advancing my musical career. I've been a member of the James Logan Wind Symphony, our school's top ensemble, for two years, and I just recently played in the CASMEC All-State Symphonic Band. I'm ready to expand my horizons.
The total cost of tuition is $9,450 and it covers room and board, classes, group instruction, all recreational facilities and admission to faculty and student performances, and private lessons.
I was able to qualify for need-based financial aid in the amount of $2,600, as well as a merit-based aid of $2,000, but the remaining amount has a heavy impact on my family's finances. In addition to the tuition, there are additional costs including airfare and uniforms.
If the goal is not reached in time for this year's camp, the money will be used in other music-related endeavors, including audition fees for next year, a trip to New York with my school's wind symphony, and marching band.
