Send Destiny to Callaloo!

Hey y'all! My name is Destiny Hemphill, and I am a poet and healer based in Durham, NC. Recently, I have been afforded the amazing opportunity to attend Callaloo's Writing Workshop in Barbados, which takes place May 21-May 27. I am thrilled to have this opportunity, but in my state of transition I cannot fund the trip alone. So I would be really grateful for your support!
What this means to me: More than ever, I feel called to write and to use creative language as a vehicle of transformation. Much of my work thus far has looked like writing in solitude. Even though much of this work in solitude has been generative and even necessary, I have come to a point where I long to share a space with writers engaged in similar work.
I feel very deeply that there is something distinctly activating about communal spaces. Thus, even though I could possibly achieve the same growth as a writer alone as I would in the context of the community that I long for, I know that such growth would take much longer alone.
Callaloo offers me that. I am excited to fellowship with other black poets in a space where I receive support, critique, analysis, and full recognition of my voice instead of dismissive criticisms and tokenization. I'll alsobe working with the phenomenal Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gregory Pardlo. Thus, going to Callalloo means an opportunity deepen my vessel to practice my craft more deliberately.
Your support funds:
$200--Registration Fee
$165--Passport Application + Processing Fee
$675--Round Trip Flight
$600--Lodging
$200--Food
$160--Emergency Funds
-------------------------------------
$2000--TOTAL
Any donations beyond that would be used to help me transition into the MFA Program that I'm beginning in the fall.
How else can you support? If you are in the Durham area, you can use your donation to purchase a ticket to my poetry reading polyphony at Beyu Caffe on April 10 here.
