Help send Bakita and her sisters to school!

In September 2024, we found 16 year-old Bakita dying in the back of a church in Juba, South Sudan— in pain, and barely conscious. She had been brutally assaulted by a gang, beaten, and burned with battery acid before being left for dead.

Her two younger sisters, just children themselves, did everything they could to save her. With no resources and no one to turn to, they took her to the local hospital and spent three months scrounging for food to keep her alive. But when they couldn’t pay the hospital bills, she was denied further treatment and kicked out onto the streets.

Her friend Elizabeth refused to give up. She brought Bakita to our church, hoping someone would help. And that’s where we found her.

We rushed her to a nearby clinic, but it quickly became clear that she wouldn’t survive without better care. After two weeks of uncertainty, we managed to get her medically evacuated to the AIC Mission Hospital in Kapsowar, Kenya, where she finally received the life-saving surgery she needed. It took a month of waiting just for her body to be strong enough for the procedure, and another three months of recovery before she could walk again.

Through it all, her sisters and Elizabeth prayed for and supported her from afar. And when Bakita was finally strong enough, they were able to join her in Kenya as refugees.

But their journey is far from over.

The only reason these girls were in Juba in the first place was because they wanted to go to school—but instead, they were forced to work in a tea shop to survive. In a heartbreaking betrayal, it was Bakita’s own step-sister who arranged the attack on her. Their mother has since abandoned them.

And yet, despite everything, these four girls have never stopped dreaming of a better future.

For the past four months, they have been taking intensive English tutoring, and now they are ready to enroll in boarding school in Kenya. But they need our help to make it happen.

We need to raise $7,500 to cover their school fees, boarding, and supplies for the next year.

Will you help send Bakita, her two sisters, and Elizabeth to school?

Education is their chance to finally build the future they deserve. They have already overcome so much—walking over 1,000 kilometres to escape war, to Bentiu, South Sudan, surviving unimaginable hardship, and never giving up. Now, they just need someone to stand with them.

Every donation—no matter the amount—makes a difference.
