About my project:

During this residency, I plan to expand a previous body of work, “The Forgiveness Project,” where I gathered community perspectives on forgiveness and trust. While in Mexico City, I will engage with participants in the residency and local residents, introducing an international perspective to the project that I am excited to explore. I aim to investigate how cultural backgrounds shape individual approaches to forgiveness, as well as how people balance forgiveness with the need to set boundaries in their relationships. These profound conversations will inform my studio practice, resulting in a series of gouache paintings and graphite drawings on Yupo paper. I will incorporate personal symbols, such as the Coral snake, which reflects the balance between danger and trust. I also look forward to integrating imagery inspired by the vibrant environment of Mexico City and weaving insights from these discussions into my work. I often include birds, snakes, and plants in my work, which is the same subject as the Mexican flag, and I’d certainly like to pursue those dynamics. Through this project, I aim to create a nuanced exploration of forgiveness that captures both personal experiences and cultural influences.
