Send Ariana to Present Her NASA Research at AMS!

Hi!

My name is Ariana Elena Castillo and I am about to graduate from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Atmospheric Science! I have chased my passions my entire life, whether it be becoming a violinist, pianist or learning how to figure skate. But more importantly, becoming a meteorologist and a scientist has been something I have been striving for my entire life.

Last summer, I interned with NASA for the second time at Langley Research Center where I studied smoke plumes from biomass burning and how it affects our environment, our atmosphere and our ecosystems. It is important to understand modeling where smoke goes in order to forecast for future pollution events so people can be safe and healthy, but also to know how it affects other environments downstream and its implications on climate change.

My abstract for my research at NASA was accepted to present a poster at a conference called the AMS Annual Meeting!

Communicating science to others is something I am extremely passionate about, which is why I plan on presenting my research at the 100th American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting in Boston, MA in January. Since I am graduating, I cannot receive funding from my department or university. And unfortunately, conferences are quite expensive - fees, flights, lodging, food.

I am a self-paying Latina  college student who has relied on scholarships, working, and doing calligraphy and watercolor commissions on the side. I want to continue to chase my passions, but finances are an obstacle that can prevent me from moving forward.

This conference has been a great opportunity for me to not only network and establish connections, but to also lay down the foundations for my career and possibly lay down a path for graduate school. I want this to not just be an opportunity for me, but to show other minority women that they also have a place in the atmospheric science community.

If you know me, I usually do not ask for help unless I absolutely need it - so please feel free to share this with others.

Atmospheric scientists and meteorologists stick together!
