Since I was young, I've always wanted to attend Harvard University, and this summer, I have the opportunity to go! Yaaayyy!
I applied to and was accepted into the National Institute for Urban School Leaders , which is a weeklong program at Harvard that focuses on understanding the impact of race & culture on the learning environment and the role of leadership in urban schools through this lens. For the last four years, I have worked as a Special Education teacher & team manager for YES Prep Public Schools. YES Prep serves students in grades 6-12 in various underserved communities around Houston; most of these students are of a minority background. Attending this program will allow me to consider the intersection of racial and cultural implications with students’ abilities and disabilities within the context of Special Education in order to clarify my personal vision for my leadership and to create a plan for more student engagement and academic achievement on my campus.
The program (instructional materials) costs $3750. Staying in Boston/ near Harvard for the week costs anywhere from $575 - $1000. So, I'm asking (and praying) for $4500.
The deadline for submitting payment to Harvard is less than 30 days away! (I know! Time's ticking! No, I didn't procrastinate; that's the timeframe Harvard gave me.)
Please, please, please help me go to Harvard! Participating in this weeklong think tank/ learning session/ networking opportunity will give me the chance to ideate with other urban school leaders who have experiences & perspectives to share that I couldn't access anywhere else. It will give me the chance to improve who I am, how I operate as a leader, and how I see and impact educational systems for the better good of my students and my team.
