Thandeka is a South African attorney who dares to dream big. She has been accepted to Oxford University’s (United Kingdom) International Human Rights Law program (as shown in the photo) and needs help funding the program. As a South African born at the end of apartheid into a working-class family, Thandeka is a budding leader in South Africa who has committed her life to using the law to improve the condition of her country. She is currently working in the field of human rights law and this educational opportunity will allow her to expand her work at one of the best universities in the world. 

Despite getting some scholarships to assist with part of her tuition she still living costs, the remaining tuition, and travel costs to in-person sessions in Oxford. Her room and board expenses in addition to tuition are more than her savings, especially since the South African Rand dropped in value relative to the British Pound due to the pandemic.  Since she is not eligible for loans in the UK so any help would go a long way.

A few details on her financial needs:

Travel:

- Flying from Johannesburg to London plus onward transport is about $2000 (Rand32 936)

Living expenses:

- Oxford estimates approximately 6300 GBP for the 6 months she will have to spend living in Oxford UK. This is approximately $8000 (Rand 131 744)

- Oxford's total tuition for the programs two years is 28882 GBP ($36,600). She owes approximately $13 000 (Rand 214, 084)

Ms Thandeka P Kathi, BS Honours (Rhodes University), LLB (Rhodes University)
has six years of experience working in civil society and for social justice. Thandeka is an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. Her work is centered on achieving Environmental Justice as well as Civil and Political justice. In addition to having significant experience in South African law, she is a newly minted fellow of The Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA). ISLA is an organization focusing on the development of jurisprudence on sexual rights and women’s human rights on the continent by providing expertise on strategic litigation. She also participated in the Bertha Foundation Be Just International Fellowship from 2017 to 2019 and a Trial Advocacy Training programme participant. The Oxford International Human Rights Law program is geared towards attorneys like Tandeka and completion of the program will further cement her upward climb towards being one of South Africa's leading civil rights attorneys.
