FIRE AT SELMA LEARNING CENTER
SELMA ALABAMA’S CHILDREN NEED OUR HELP
Without our help their doors will soon close
In the heart of Selma, Alabama, just a stone’s throw from the Edmund Pettus Bridge is the McRae-Gaines Learning Center, an award winning, historic preparatory school ages 6 mos to 9 years, founded in 1978 to serve low-income and minority children of working families in Selma, Alabama and Dallas County.
The Director of the school is Mrs. Sadie Moss. She and her sister JoAnn Bland were young girls, 17 & 11, when they were attacked on the bridge on Bloody Sunday along with hundreds more of the people of Selma. The McRae-Gaines Center has educated many of the children and grandchildren of that Civil Rights Movement’s foot soldiers. What a great gift they gave to this country and the world. They gave to us and now they need us to give to them.
The school is struggling. New regulations and upkeep on the old building are costing more and more. In addition Sadie Moss does not turn children away because they cannot pay. Just prior to the July 4, 2016 holiday, McRae-Gaines had a "small fire" in the ceiling of the Director's office. The Fire Department responded and an electrician who was working at the school broke into the school to allow them access. That "small" fire turned out to be a major expense for McRae-Gaines because of damage caused to the wiring by a powerful electrical surge.
The school is still struggling to recover from the costs and the work is not done. Meanwhile the bills mount and creditors are cutting them off. Creditors like their food suppliers. Please help me help them. Check out their Facebook page and website
