My name is Christiana Adekunle and I am 21 years old, turning 22 on September 5th . I have a strong passion for changing the face of the entertainment industry. This interest was first discovered during my college years, where I learnt how to create magazines, film covers, trailers and posters. I found the idea of creating graphic content very fascinating as it sparked a new level of creativity in me. In pursuit of my dreams I decided to pursue this further by applying to Canterbury Christ Church University to study media and communications. Thus far, I have really enjoyed learning about the media industry, and its’ relevance in the 21st century, as well as enjoying the practical projects assigned to me during the year. I have learnt so much during my first and second year of university and found a new way of reproducing my skills through business.
So why do I need your help?
I have completed 2 years of my three-year programme and am now waiting to start my final year in September. With fees at £9710 a year, it has been a huge struggle finding the money to get this far, whilst also working zero hours contracts and juggling university work. I spent a couple of months prior to starting the course trying to piece together cash and applying for scholarships. I have applied twice for article 21 scholarship and have been refused on both occasions, and I am not eligible to get student loan and student finance due to my status in the country. Unfortunately, due to the rigorous time at school and work, I found myself out of work (with no notice) over the summer of 2017.This has caused a major setback regarding paying for my fees for this year as I was required to put some of the funding I'd received towards assisting my parents with living expenses and utility bills. Since becoming a student and requiring part time work to sustain myself, I have been forced to work as "self-employed". I am currently running a design business, creating graphic content such as logos, flyers, posters, much more. However, the income I receive from the business only plays a small part in clearing my outstanding fees.
I have an outstanding balance of £7800 to pay on my fees for my second year. My university have informed me saying I would not be able to progress into my final year unless the fees is cleared before the start date. Moreover, Canterbury Christ Church University has not been lenient in allowing students to pay later, or set up manageable payment plans throughout the 3rd year to help pay off the second-year fee. Despite the fees and living costs in London getting higher - plus work and housing conditions getting more and more unstable - they have decided to now try and push out students who haven't paid their full fees yet, despite completing 2 years of the course. They made a change to their policy with no notice, and have deactivated my card meaning I can't submit my assignments, access the library and borrow books, until I make a payment that satisfies them.
Your support is needed...
I can say these two years have been very stressful and mentally draining for me. I have tirelessly worked multiple jobs to try and raise funds for my university fees. I do not wish for my education to be interrupted at this point as it took a lot of work for me to reach where I am at and will like to continue. I'm turning to this platform as a last resort, in the hope that I can carry on and complete my studies.
Nothing is too small.
Whichever way in which you can support, even if it is by sharing this fundraiser to friends and family, I would be very grateful.
Your support will be much appreciated.
