My name is Selene, and today I am preparing for a life-changing kidney transplant. For the past six years, I have been on dialysis, connecting to a machine every night just to keep going. My journey began when I was diagnosed with lupus, which not only affected my kidneys but also impacted my brain. It’s been a long and difficult road, but I have always tried to stay hopeful and strong.

This transplant is a huge step forward, but it also means I won’t be able to work for the next three months while I recover. My mom, who has been my rock through all of this, will be taking time off work as well to care for me during my recovery. We are both facing a period without income, and the added costs of traveling to San Francisco for follow-up appointments make things even more challenging.
