The week before Christmas, we took Selena to the vet after she was limping on her back left knee, to learn she had a joint effusion, frayed ligaments around her knee, and her X-rays showed arthritis in both knees. We then waited two weeks to see if her knee would heal with rest and medication. At our follow up in January, we learned that her injury progressed to a full tear of her ACL, which was not unexpected. We scheduled TPLO surgery for February 24th and we were originally estimated $4,164 (including medication she will need). I looked into pet health insurance, but because orthopedic conditions have a 6-month waiting period, we are too late to utilize it.

We went to the emergency vet a few Saturdays later after she started limping on her right leg, and couldn't bear weight on either back leg (like Bambi falling). We learned that she tore her other ACL while waiting on the first surgery.

She is still getting surgery on the 24th, and they will decide which leg to do that day depending on which one seems to be bothering her worse, and then 8 weeks into recovery, she will get a second TPLO surgery on her other leg. This means that the total cost will double to just over $8,000.

It's extremely hard and humbling to ask for help. This is just a large and unexpected expense. We love our community and so many of you all have loved on Selena. She is 7 and a half years old and has many years left to live, and we want to give her the best quality of life. Her favorite things in life are hiking, running, going to daycare, and rough housing, all of which require her legs to be working.
