Hi, my name is Talia Zahra and I am an oncologist at Baptist Hospital in Miami, Florida. On May 20, 2023, I will be running 100 miles in the Keys 100-mile race. I love to run; especially, long distances that push my limits. Cycling through the peaks and valleys of an ultra-marathon reminds me of the often-uncertain journey of life. The experience helps me to find the courage to live from the heart. While the races are challenging, I receive great inspiration from the strength of my patients, who bravely fight for their lives.

I am running this race to raise money for Seis Luces (Six Lights), a non-profit organization that I am developing to enhance the lives of acute leukemia patients receiving treatment at Baptist Hospital. This Go Fund Me is the first step toward that end.

Six is a special number standing for the embodiment of the heart, and light is an energy within all of us. While we may not always experience our own light, there are people all around us who use our light to guide their path. Seis luces represents the six pillars of love, strength, resilience, belief, patience, and gratitude.

Acute leukemia is an aggressive blood cancer, present among patients of all ages, usually with a rapid onset of symptoms, and often requiring an initial hospitalization of 4-6 weeks. As an oncologist who specializes in the treatment of acute leukemia, I see first-hand the life changing stress that the diagnosis and management places on patients and their families. The experience is physically, emotionally, socially, and financially difficult.

The mission of Seis Luces is to support, encourage and brighten the lives of our acute leukemia patients during their darkest hours. Instead of having a research-based focus, Seis Luces will provide experiences to patients during their prolonged hospital stay. Candle-lit dinners for anniversaries, movie night, birthday celebrations, “survival” baskets, reiki, massage, and art therapy are among the many events planned to ease the burden on those bravely paving their path.

Our patients are my motivation, and I am grateful to be able to give back in any way I can. Every dollar that you donate toward this cause will go directly toward our patients.
