Segis Daniel Avila - Remembrance

Segis Daniel Avila died peacefully in the early morning of March 21, 2021 from complications associated with pulmonary hypertension.  The money raised here will go to organizations related to the research, care and/or control of pulmonary hypertension, including Pulmonary Hypertension Association . The goal amount is his birthdate.

Daniel was already diagnosed when we met, and he told me early in our dating.  PH was something we always knew was there, but he refused to let it prevent him from doing the things he wanted.  He loved and continued to play softball, primarily as a pitcher, and when batting he would only run to first base – and on rare occasion second – even if others would easily make a triple out of a similar hit.

He actively worked in SAG-AFTRA as “background” and as “stand-in” on many tv, movie, music video, video game, and photo productions and was always excited to get featured in the final release.  He sent me screenshots of himself in Kylie Minogue’s “All The Lovers” video and was so proud and excited he’d TOUCHED her.  We went to see “Lowriders” in the cinema so he could see and show me his name in the credits as a Stand-in.

Daniel was a complicated person and had complicated relationships, only opening to specific people about specific parts of his life and person; few ever had the whole picture of who Daniel was.  He was a silly but fierce friend and an even more silly but private and quiet love.
The past two-plus years is when the pulmonary hypertension began to advance to a point where it was a constant obstacle causing the energy he had to slowly diminished.  It was frustrating for him because he wanted to do so much but was having increasing difficulty doing routine things like walking at the beach or driving.  Daniel resisted going out and doing things because he didn’t have the energy and didn’t want to dampen others’ fun.  The afternoon of March 20th Daniel was faced with a decision he bravely faced when he decided he wanted to stop all medications, knowing he had hours to days’ worth of strength left without them.
Daniel brought joy and happiness to so many people through his smile and silly energy, ability to debate what “good music” was, and willingness to try different things.  He is remembered and loved.
