Sega needs back surgery

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your support and generosity so far! Sega has had his CT scan and is in surgery. He does indeed have IVDD and has several discs in his low back that are affected. IVDD is a degenerative (age-related) condition resulting in the weakening of the discs between vertebrae. Rupture of a disc can result in pressure on the spinal cord causing a range of symptoms from pain to paralysis. The surgery will remove some of the disc material that has leaked out and help reduce pressure on the spine. There will be a long recovery period and the surgeon is estimating that Sega will need to stay in hospital for several weeks following his surgery. Specialty care in hospital adds up very fast, so Sega and Shauna still need lots of help to see him through this tough time. I know it means so much to Shauna that so many people have been willing to help her get Sega the care he needs.
Dogs are Shauna's life and passion. She has helped so many people over the years with their dogs, whether it's developing the strongest agility partnership or solving behavioural concerns she uses her amazing knowledge and intuition to allow dogs to live their best lives.
On Sunday, while Shauna was out of town, her amazing border collie Sega who so many of us know and love, started to act sore. Over the past few days his symptoms have progressed and he is now completely paralyzed in both hind legs. A premlimary vet visit and x-rays suggest that he may have Intervertebral Disc Disease, and the progression of his symptoms means that he very likely needs a major operation to try to restore the use of his legs. Time is critical with spinal procedures, so the sooner he can be evaluated by the surgeon and get a CT scan to confirm the problem the better his outcome after surgery will be.
Although Sega is a world class agility dog, he has so many other amazing qualities that make him an amazing family member, and which have endeared him to so many people in the agility and dog training world. It would be really great to get him back on his feet again so he can continue to live his best life with Shauna and her family.
