Seeds of Hope: Cultivating Change in Kenya
Hello! I'm Charlie Martin, a eleven-year-old girl from Issaquah, Washington. Some might say I'm young, but I believe age is just a number when it comes to making a difference. That's why I started "Charlie Cares," my charity organization. Even at a young age, I've seen that the world needs more compassion, and I’d like to do what I can to make our home a better place for everyone.
Imagine living in a village where every meal is uncertain, where families are struggling daily to secure even the most basic nourishment. This is the reality in Bungoma, Kenya, a village that is currently facing the challenges of food insecurity. As the planting season is in full swing, we have a narrow window of opportunity to turn things around.
Bungoma is a very poor village. Due to inflation, farmers in the village don’t have enough money to purchase the seeds that they need for this planting season. My goal is to raise $5,000 to help them secure these seeds. The resulting crops will serve as a vital food source for the community, and any surplus harvest will be sold. The proceeds will go toward addressing Bungoma's other pressing needs, such as clean water, medicine, educational resources, and clothing.
A little more information about the seeds:
The local seed bank is Ronak Agrovet., LTD. The company sells the seeds in packets.
Here is a breakdown of what seeds Bungoma needs and how much they cost:
$10 per packet:
- Hybrid 505
- Hybrid 51
- Hybrid 514
- Hybrid 614
$12 per packet:
- Hybrid Sungura
- Hybrid Tembo
- Hybrid DK 777
- Hybrid 8031
I'm grateful to have Patrick Wesonga on our side. Based in Bungoma, he's a close friend of my father, Yves Martin, and has generously stepped forward to help distribute the seeds to local farmers. With his assistance, we can ensure every seed sown brings change.
The clock is ticking! With the planting season ending in mid-September, every moment and every donation counts. Together, let's cultivate change in Bungoma and watch as our seeds grow into a brighter future for the community. Thank you for being a part of this journey. Every seed of hope, no matter how small, can yield a world of change.
Will you help me sow the Seeds of Hope?
