Seedlings to Sunflowers is a Non-Profit Childcare & Family Center located in Gorham, Maine.
Our mission is to encourage each child in all areas of development. We believe that every child presented with the opportunity to belong, develop independence, cultivate generosity and to master skills, will develop a healthy sense of self, which will enhance their ability to succeed academically and socially.
We are a learning center built to nurture and support the development of children and our community. Inspired by a Systems Theory Approach, we believe that schools and childcare centers have an opportunity to strengthen connections between families and educators and these building blocks will in turn create a stronger community for all of us.
Nature-based and experiential learning is an integral part of our mission, which is why the outdoor area of our school is important to us to outfit with items that are beneficial to children's development.
As a new non-profit center (just having opened last June 2018), we are still in need of playground equipment. At the very top of our list are 2 swing sets, 1 for the smaller children that includes a small climbing wall for gross motor development and cross patterning, and a larger swing set for the bigger kids. We also would like to add a small wooden seesaw/climber to the outdoor space.
Swings are certainly fun, but they offer even more than that!
Why is swinging beneficial to child development?
- Helps with sensory integration by aiding in vestibular processing: The vestibular system is the sense of movement. It informs us if we’re moving, how fast, and in which direction we’re headed.This system is the most influential of all the senses as it affects almost everything we do: balance, coordination, fine motor skills, and even self-regulation all rely on the vestibular system.
- Can help calm the body
- Builds fine motor skills (gripping the chains), and gross motor skills (pumping their legs), and coordination (putting it all together)
- Builds core strength and helps with balance
- Encourages social interaction and development
- Can be especially helpful for children with sensory issues
- Some studies have even shown it can help with focus and sleep!
