My name is Samarth Fageria and I am a Masters student studying Global Health Systems at the University of Western Ontario. This summer, I am in Uganda working at the Village Health Project (VHP) which is a non-profit organization based in the village of Lweza. It partners with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
There has been a growing concern over the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Uganda, with over 35% of all deaths caused by NCDs annually. The big four NCDs that are prevalent in Uganda are hypertension, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory disease. The risk factors, coupled with an increase in life expectancy over the last 20 years, have put communities like Lweza at risk of acquiring NCDs.
The village of Lweza is in the process of building a health centre with a focus on NCD prevention. This health centre will be a remarkable resource for approximately 7000 residents living in the village. For the community to benefit from the centre, there is a need to implement educational programs that promote prevention through self-care behaviors. My work involves collaborating with key community leaders to begin identifying awareness gaps as well as to understand dietary preferences and agricultural practices within the community, and how they relate to the manifestation of NCDs.
Your generous funds will support the community by building capacity among the VHP members as well as local school staff, and will facilitate the exchange of information and ideas through collaborative educational sessions.
Thank you for your support. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email [email redacted].
