My name is Mbali Taryn Khumalo, and although I grew up in Canada for most of my childhood, South Africa, my country of birth, has always held a special place in my heart.
Throughout my life, I have always enjoyed making a difference in other people's lives, whether it was delivering food to homeless shelters, filling backpacks for less fortunate students, packing gifts for Operation Christmas Child, or visiting sick children as part of the BumbleBee Foundation. In 2018, my brother initiated a School Shoe project at Sedi-Laka Primary School and successfully donated 237 school shoes to less fortunate students. During this time, I got the opportunity to be involved and helped with purchasing, packing, and delivering shoes to these kind-hearted, appreciative kids. As I thought about my own educational journey, I realized that there is so much I can do to create a better environment for both the students and teachers. Recently, I contacted the school about any initiatives I could get involved in, to which they responded that they require an upgraded staff room for the teachers, however, the more immediate need is sanitation. In order to improve sanitation, the sinks and toilets need to be updated and the overall student restroom needs to be refreshed.
My goal is to raise $2,850 throughout August of 2021 to ensure that the student's health is not at risk. The importance of hygiene and sanitation is to prevent illnesses, diseases, and infections. A clean bathroom helps decrease viruses and bacteria as well as encouraging a healthy environment! I believe that if I can feel safe and be privileged enough to not worry about my health as I enter a bathroom, other children around the world should too! The money will be paid directly to the contractor, and the project's progress will be reported.
