Security shutters for The Pear Cafe

After 12 years of peace, in the space of two weeks in November, we suffered 2 successful break ins and one attempted break in at my cafe, The Pear Cafe, in Bristol.

Overwhelming support following this has encouraged me to set this page up. The police advised me that reinforced security shutters were the only option left (we are behind 10’ security gates already and have CCTV which picked up the incidents).

These shutters are expensive as they have to be hand made to order. I have used a small local (but very experienced) business (About Security) and the shutters are currently being made. Two other local businesses are working on the sheet metal elements and the powder coating (painted bits). I have everything crossed they’ll be ready and fitted before Xmas, as leaving my cafe for the holidays without the extra security in place is something I really hope I don’t have to do.

The impact of the cost of the shutters on a small business is huge. Put simply, it's an almost impossible sum to raise on the economics of a small neighbourhood cafe. When people messaged me telling me they wanted to help and asking what could be done, I felt uneasy about accepting donations but it came down to one thing; If this happened to a friend with another small business and they couldn’t afford to get the work done, I’d want to help. So here I am. Asking for your help and accepting your charity and support. Anything at all that you are able to contribute is hugely appreciated. My landlords are donating generously and have helped hugely by paying upfront the deposit required to order the shutters.

For donations of £20 or more, I have also designed a special, limited edition tote bag, with hand screen printing by local Bristol studio, Simple Print Studio. 100% of the profits (after P&P) will go to the campaign. The bags are strong and made from organic cotton and are, I hope, the sort of bag you’ll really want to use loads. A simple design, shouting out your support for small business. That’s what this is all about. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for anything at all you are able to donate.
