On Friday morning, around 12am, Chabad of Delaware's Assistant Rabbi, Sholom and his wife Chanale smelled smoke from their home behind the synagogue building. He went to check to see what was causing the smell, and discovered latticework leaning against the synagogue building engulfed in flames, with a propane tank placed directly under it. He acted quickly, and was able to put out the fire before it could escalate.
After calling the authorities, the story became very clear: Chabad of Delaware was the victim of an arson attack. Again.
If you're keeping track, that makes this the second arson attack on a synagogue in Delaware within a three month span.
Many miraculous details meant that the physical damage to the center itself is minimal.
However, the Jewish community at Chabad of Delaware understand, and have understood for a long time that there are sadly those who wish us harm. We also understand that a good path forward is to make sure that our security is a number one priority for us. However, this is not an inexpensive venture.
While we are so grateful for the members of the community who so continuously give of their own time and money, we are not large in number.
Chabad does not charge membership - all are welcome. We have already made investments to accommodate our space for COVID-19, and we want to be sure that we are not just safe from the virus as we worked so hard to
be, but also safe from other external harm that appears to want to knock on our community's door far too often.
Thank you in advance for anything you're able to do to help us - we plan to use every penny donated toward enhancing the security of our
community center!

Talia Goren,
Chabad of Delaware community member since 1991
