Help secure safe housing for family member

tldr:

Access to safe and affordable housing is an essential need, and being cut off from this need poses an extreme environmental stressor, especially for those who experience severe mental illness. I am humbly reaching out for your financial support in securing safe and affordable housing for a close family member for the summer.

Thank you for allowing me your time to listen to my request for aid.

My name is Vinh, a first-gen low income university student whose family is experiencing financial hardship and debt due to COVID-19 significantly impacting our income from our small nail salon business. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I am reaching out for financial support for one of my close family members who is unable to work due to health reasons and has experienced homelessness in the past and again is at high risk for housing insecurity right now.

Though they have granted me permission to share their experience in hopes of support, I wish to preserve anonymity and privacy for them so I will not provide identifying details about them, but in summary, due to severe, debilitating schizophrenia and lack of institutional support in their area for those who experience mental disabilities, they were recently involuntarily hospitalized and are now unable to stay in their previous living arrangements out of safety for everyone involved. These past weeks, with the support of my friends, I have extensively exhausted almost every local resource in their area without success as well as various different counties public housing and section 8 housing choice voucher programs, which are incredibly under-resourced with waitlists of up to 10 years sometimes. I am now humbly asking for your support after being overwhelmed and without many options (a sample above).

We have temporarily found transitional housing for them for the next two weeks, but the situation is very unideal given their schizophrenia, as they are sharing a space with 10 other people and have nowhere to sleep but on the floor so I am trying to find a permanent, sustainable solution for them.

Within these next two weeks, we will continue to connect with different resources for those who are experiencing financial hardship and disability, getting them connected to a dedicated case worker, advocating for higher disability income (currently, they only receive $130 per month), and trying to find and secure a safe and affordable housing option for them.

While I will continue to do all I can to support them, unfortunately, I am unable to financially support their housing alone right now and am asking for your financial assistance.

If you have capacity to help, any contribution to our situation would be greatly appreciated and useful and would go directly towards rental payments and application fees and living expenses for independent housing for the summer in an environment that is safe for everyone and accommodates their needs (private space, forgiving landlord, physical proximity to family and health care providers) until I can earn and save enough money to support them independently. If you’d like to help, please donate on gofundme or venmo me directly at @vinnytintin in order to avoid gofundme platform fees. For those that would like specific documentation for their situation, I can provide medical and financial documentation as well as receipts of the housing units and programs we are looking into.

Thank you again for your time,
Vinh
