Since I was 18, I had the vision that one day I would provide a resource for people like me. Those that made it through high school and still lacked the adequate skills to read, resulting in not fully being able to function in society. Due to a great deal of embarrassment and shame, I hid and was too afraid to seek help. I would go through life for years playing it small and hiding my lack of reading skills at all costs. The amount of work that went into hiding I had the best light blub moment. What if I worked just as hard to correct the problem versus covering it up? I found courage to share with my friend and she started tutoring me. She gave me so much encouragement and hope that I could be a better, more confident reader, and fill in my learning gaps after all this time. Once I started doing the work for myself daily, I had the overwhelming reminder that I was supposed to do more, and that people were waiting on me to create a service that would help them too. Little did I know, the number of people waiting would be so great. Finally having courage, I stepped out and shared the very thing I hid for more then half of my life. Two friends believed in my passion and were willing to help me create a vision and get things started.
However, little did I know, Covid would hit. I was questioning everything in that moment. Is Covid a sign that I should not do this? How would we have a tutor service when we cannot gather? The city is shut down and people are not working so how do I ask for support and donations? These are just a few of the many questions I had. The desire and passion to service a forgotten about population was stronger then the fear of the unknown and possible failure. We have applied for grants after grants and a couple small successes from local businesses, but nothing like I thought we would receive. I was told no one will donate to a non-profit until we were at our 3 year mark. I was immediately discouraged. I thought it took me years to share and to start this work and it would be over before it started because the climate of the world due to Covid.
I had another friend that helped me find another way and we did the first social media fundraiser where I shared my story with the world. The amount of support, encouragement, and donation that we received from family and friends was overwhelming, yet so refreshing. We were able to start the work. As we have continued to search for funding, we haven’t had the best success to really keep things going. Therefore, we have tried other fundraising ideas like raffle giveaways and now this GoFundMe Campaign.
The GoFundMe will support with securing our lease space, licenses for our tutors, leveling testing for our adult learners and just honestly keeping the lights on. We know that many of you have already supported our cause to make a difference and we are so appreciative of the impact you have made. We are in need of your support with more donations or by simply sharing this GoFundMe Campaign with your personal and professional networks. Please know that even $5.00 helps us get closer to our goal.
