Help Kris secure funds for danceWEB 2024

Hi family, loved ones, friends, friends of friends :)

For those who don’t know me, my name is Kris Lee and I am a dancer and performer based in NYC. This summer, I have the opportunity to be a part of the danceWEB scholarship program located at the ImpulsTanz Festival in Vienna, Austria. Out of 700 applicants from 61 countries, 57 artists were chosen and YOUR GIRL IS ONE OF THEM!!! I’m raising $6,500 to support my participation in this one-of-a-kind program.

danceWEB is a five-week residency taking place in July/August 2024 within the frame of ImPulsTanz - Vienna international Dance Festival. ImpulsTanz is the largest festival for contemporary dance and performance in the world, presenting a diverse program of performances, workshops, and research projects every summer. Housed within the festival, danceWEB offers emerging professional dancers and choreographers an intensive international post-graduate training program in the field of contemporary dance and performance. Guided by this year’s amazing artistic mentor Isabel Lewis, this summer’s program invites us to escape habit and self-representation for collective movement towards compassionate risks. I accept this offer as it is in close alignment with my artistic practice.

Dance is the way I navigate life. More than steps to be repeated or techniques to be mastered, dance is a corporeal technology and strategy. A non-verbal conversation I enter into with spirit, self, and others. As a Black queer person living in this world, dance is a gift that I use to process all that is around me and to exercise non-performative liberation.

Since 2019, I have been blessed to work with an incredible group of choreographers—nora chipaumire, Stephen Petronio, Andros Zins-Browne, Moriah Evans, Ishmael Houston-Jones & Miguel Gutierrez, and Niall Jones. These experiences have activated my personal artistic inquiry and the vital force I access through dancing. I consider myself a forever student and am so excited to learn from and soak in all that danceWEB has to offer. This is a beautiful opportunity to make long-lasting relationships within the world of performance. Expansive growth is on the horizon!!

Need and Logistics:

The scholarship program covers 2/3 of the base cost for participation. This includes housing, workshops, performance tickets, bike rental/bus fare, and more! I need to source funds to cover the remaining 1/3 of the cost of participation by May 15. I also need to raise funds to cover my airfare, meals, and rent in NYC while I’m away.

Here’s the breakdown of what I’m hoping to raise:

danceWEB fee: $2,700

Airfare: $1,300

Meals for 5 weeks: $1,500

NYC Rent: $1,000

TOTAL: $6,500
