My name is Za’Kira McQueen, and I am a biochemistry and chemical biology major with a planned minor in African American Studies. I am writing to ask for support regarding housing for the upcoming academic year. I want to summarize the most important parts of my situation, so you have a clear understanding of why I am reaching out..
I am currently living in an extremely unstable and unsafe housing environment. I stay in a storage‑sized basement closet in a two‑family flat, where the relatives that are living upstairs are openly hostile toward me. Because of this, I do not have access to groceries, transportation, or basic support in the home. Consequently, I often rely on free food opportunities on campus and stay at school until late to avoid the environment. I am navigating adulthood entirely on my own without parental support. My father kicked me out before I graduated high school, and my mother does not have the financial means or space to help me.
Despite these challenges, I have remained committed to my education. School has always been my safe space and the one place where I could focus, grow, and escape instability. My long‑term goal is to become a veterinarian and eventually open my own practice, becoming the first doctor in my family. I am determined to continue breaking generational barriers, but the instability of my housing situation makes it extremely difficult to focus fully on my academics.
being able to afford campus housing would completely change my ability to succeed. It would allow me to focus on my coursework and pursue the research and clinical experiences I need for veterinary school. It would also give me the safety and stability I have never had at home.
any donation is greatly appreciated.
