My name is Jani Cousins. I am a 17-year-old senior in high school soon to graduate and start college this fall. I am an aspiring pediatrician passionate about bringing humanity back to the medical field and breaking down barriers to affordable housing. Senior year has been the most educational and trauma-filled roller coaster of my life. Basically all of high school has been like that really. Before I started my freshman year my mom passed away from cancer and it was the greatest loss me and my family has ever experienced. Also, it was a great loss personally because during those first 3 years of high school, my grief came out in many surprising ways, and through all the traumatizing and embarrassing experiences I’ve learned so much. But here comes senior year, the year I’ve been waiting for since I started high school. My expectations were so high I was planning on having straight A’s, getting into many colleges, setting a career path and everything, but life had other plans as I had fallen under the pressures of becoming an adult. My grades slipped and I fell behind. The hole I dug was too deep to pull myself out of, I was stressed and overwhelmed, during Christmas break I had a lung infection(pneumonia) and I fell into depression. After that, I started to get back on my feet and on track then boom, MY HOUSE BURNS DOWN. Me, all 5 members of my family, and my 2 dogs are safe and well but we lost everything in the fire. Not just our house but our clothes, shoes, food, technology, also personal items like pictures of our mom and more. Yes, me and my family have been through worse because we are a low-income family, but the hardest thing about this was all the uncertainty of whether we were going to have a place to lay our head, or where our next meal was coming from. But most importantly what I gained from this trial is in the midst of paralyzing worry and uncertainty you have to have to remain of good courage. I wrote this to share with you my story and to also show that through these hard times it takes a village to help and to ensure safety and security, so I would love to ask kindly if you can please help as much as you can, it's your choice but just know that you will be securing my safety and ensuring the success of me and my families future. Thank you.
