My name is Alberthia Littlejohn, mother of Kamal Littlejohn.

Kamal Littlejohn, 43 years old, is the most caring and compassionate individual, who is loved by any and everyone who comes in contact with him.

Born with Down Syndrome, Kamal had an active work and social life. In September of 2020, Kamal had an accident while preparing to go to work at Stop and Shop. He passed out, hit his head, and unfortunately suffered a serious spinal cord injury. He is now a quadriplegic and his only movement is shoulders and above. He is now totally dependent on his senior parents and caretakers to provide around-the-clock care.

It is very difficult to take Kamal out into the community for social events and to doctor’s appointments because he is wheelchair-bound. Transportation is not reliable, causing him to wait hours to be picked up, and too often he misses his very important appointments. He can only stay in his wheelchair for two-hour intervals to avoid sores and ulcers.

To help his parents provide an active life for Kamal, a handicapped-equipped van will remove an insurmountable and overwhelming amount of stress from their lives. The van would make a world of difference in Kamal’s life. It would give Kamal’s parents greater flexibility in transporting him to various doctor’s appointments, therapy treatments, and social activities.

The van would help reduce the isolation that Kamal feels and allow him to socialize with friends in his community. Our wish is to make it possible for him to enjoy his life by attending his favorite activities including restaurants, parks, movies, friends’ houses, and participating in his own personal and grocery shopping. A wheelchair-accessible van would make a world of difference with Kamal gaining greater independence. It would allow Kamal to engage with the world outside his home and once again have new experiences.
