My name is Laura and im here to tell you about my cousin Marcus. Marcus was born on August 28,1991 in Joplin, Mo at 8:04 PM. Within hours he was rushed to Springfield on life support. Marcus was born with Marfans and Beals syndrome. Marfans can affect 40 different parts of your body Encluding enlarging of his heart. Over the last 23 years, Marcus has had over 38 surgeries. Including several open heart surgeries, his brain slipped down his spine, rods in his back (totaling 18 surgeries just on his back), hes had feeding tubes and much more. Marcus didnt start walking til he was 4. Marcus's bones wouldnt grow straight. He was only able to walk for 4 years. His condition makes him weak and unable to see very clearly. Over the last several years, technology has become his daily way of communicating. Marcus doesnt like to go to the mall, or even walmart because he doesnt look like everyone else. Even though he is one of the smartest and funniest guys ive ever met. He is one of the bravest men i know.
We just got the news that his heart is failing, and needs 3 valves replaced which includes tricuspid , mitral, and aorta valve. The first open heart surgery was in Boston at the childrens hospital, in 1995 (he was 4). The second was in 2005 in iowa city (he was 13). The past 2 weeks, he was taken to iowa. The tests came back, the surgeons came in and said its too risky for them to perform. They sent all of Marcus's test results to John Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland to the number one surgeons for marfans. Marcus and his family need to be there within a few weeks with a possible stay of a few months. After the surgery Marcus will be in ICU for a long period of time. Our family is needing money for the travel, lodging, and food. Anything will help us out.
