OVERVIEW
If you love the ocean, this is a project for you! Three explorers headed out on a journey into a remote Panamanian indigenous community to meet the locals that saved their sea turtle population from annihilation. This strong community saved its sea turtle population by implementing local laws and patrols and shifting mind for a more sustainable approach to precious wildlife.
As a team of scientists and environmentalists, we decided to make a short film and tell their story. Help us make our dream of finishing this short film a reality by helping us raise money for this project: Sea Turtle Defenders, a documentary that seeks to raise awareness about the conservation of sea turtles in Panama.
MEET THE TEAM
Anna is an environmental photographer and biologist, Guillermo is an oceanographer and Martina is an environmental journalist and diver. The three of us have been dedicating our lives to protect the ocean and earth around the world, and together, last spring, we traveled to a very remote indigenous community to film and tell the story of one of the first indigenous community in Panama that began protecting its turtles.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
This is a very important issue because unfortunately in Panama all species of sea turtles are in critical danger of extinction. People have been hunting turtles for the consumption of their meat, eggs and sometimes for use also to make jewelry with the precious and beautiful shells.
OUR IMPACT
We trust that by finishing this documentary we can change the way of thinking of many people, by showing a solution and an alternative that emerged from the same premises and spread a unified message to save the turtles together.
WHAT WE NEED
We are raising $1,500 to finish this project. Each of us team member has a conservation job that takes up most of our time during the week, and working on this passion project has been reserved for the little free time we have. Unfortunately, making a film is hard work and we've realized we will need some financial support to finish it. Here is our breakdown: editing: $500, screenplay writing and fundraising: $300, sound design: $200 and promotion: $500 (we want this project to reach as many people as it can).
FINAL WORDS
In Bocas del Toro, the Caribbean Island of Panama where we all live, there is hardly any turtle left in the sea. We do not want this to happen throughout the country. If you can help us with a donation of even $5 we could finish this movie and spread the word about sea turtles in Panama.

Necesitamos tu ayuda para terminar Sea Turtle Defenders, el documental que busca generar conciencia sobre la conservación de las tortugas marinas en Panamá.
Somos Anna, fotógrafa ambiental y Bióloga, Guille, oceanógrafo, y Martina, periodista ambiental y buceadora. Los tres dedicamos nuestra vida a proteger el océano y la naturaleza alrededor del mundo. Juntos viajamos a una comunidad indígena donde no hay wifi ni electricidad para filmar y contar la historia de la primera comunidad indígena de Panamá que comenzó a proteger sus tortugas.
Esto es muy importante porque lamentablemente en Panamá todas las especies de tortugas marinas se encuentran en peligro crítico de extinción. La gente caza las tortugas para el consumo interno y externo de su carne, huevos y en ocasiones también hacen joyería con el caparazón.
Confiamos en que terminando este documental podemos cambiar la forma de pensar de muchas personas, mostrando una solución y una alternativa que surgió de los mismos locales. Para que se contagie el mensaje y juntos salvemos las tortugas. En Bocas del Toro, la isla de Panamá donde los tres vivimos, ya casi no vemos tortugas marinas cuando buceamos o nos metemos en el mar. Y no queremos que esto ocurra en todo el pais.
