On July 6, 2018 I received the text no one wants to receive. It read, "Hey Boss... well horrible news...... the doctors found cancer in my liver. This came out of nowhere. I'm sorry I won't be at work for a while." I may have reread it in one of the Metreon Target offices four times before it actually registered. My superhero Property Management Technician had cancer. He had been running around the store just last week when all of a sudden his world was turned upside down.
There is not much more you could ask out of a PMT at Target. He has the highest sense of urgency and independence. He doesn't complain when he has to unclog 15 shirts just flushed down the toilet by a guest or clean up after someone decides to use our bathroom sinks as showers they can stand on. He is the ultimate problem solver in a City Target that experiences some of the most peculiar problems, but this is just one problem he can't solve alone. He needs our help and his family does too.
When I asked Sean if I could start a GoFundMe Page for him, he didn't even know what that was. He is simple and does his job to the best of his ability. I asked him to send a little bit about himself and this is what he wrote:
"I was born and raised in Alameda. I have a daughter Juliana 15 years old and then there's my boys who just had their birthdays. Nolan is 14 and Tylor is 10. My hobbies are astronomy and history. My favorite thing to do is spend time with my kids. On the weekend we have Daddy Day and we love to go bowling a lot and play video arcade games. Lots of times we just get in the car and go exploring for something new. I was so excited to get the interview with Target and absolutely thrilled to be hired. I knew I'd be a valuable asset to the team and make a good contribution to the company. I like to think I have been."
Sean is a single dad and living in the Bay Area is no easy feat. The doctor's estimate Sean had been working with cancer for anywhere from 8-10 months. He complained to me about pain in his back for a few months time but said the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with him. On Friday July 6th he found out he had cancer. On Saturday July 7th he found out it was Stage 4 Liver Cancer and that he needed to start chemo as soon as his body was strong enough. This past Wednesday was the first round of treatment. Sean is in great spirits and he texts me after his treatments to give me the "Status Update".
Sean is in the fight of his life. The estimates of how long Sean has are grim so the money would go towards hospital bills and college education funds for his three kids. Even with no odds in his favor, he is a fighter. Any amount you can spare would make this a little easier on his family.
