Back in July 2022, I was diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable brain tumour. This diagnosis then dominated my life for the next two years, starting with surgery. Following some intense preparation with clinical Psychologists in the months prior, I undertook a near 10 hour awake craniotomy brain surgery to help debulk my brain tumour in November 2022. It was during this procedure that I suffered an acute stroke for which I am extremely lucky to have no significant lasting side effects today.
After my recovery from surgery, I fought through six weeks of radio therapy, which concluded in February 2023. Then, in March 2023, I took my first step into the journey of chemotherapy, which lasted 12 months.
A year on from completing my cancer treatment, I am back at work with the support of my amazing colleagues and company. Getting back to my "normal" life was my ultimate goal when I set out on my cancer journey, and I feel like I'm finally approaching that point. However, I now don't want to just live in "normality", but I want to give back by setting myself the challenge of riding the Tour De 4 with Sir Chris Hoy to raise vital funds for the Brain Tumour Research Charity.
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease since records began in 2002. For that reason, I am fundraising for the Brain Tumour Research charity.
Another frightening statistic is that just 17% of people diagnosed with a brain tumour survive longer than five years from diagnosis. We need to find a cure.
So, I would welcome any donations to help fight the battle against brain cancer. Thank you for your support!
