Sean McShane Recovery Fund

On Wednesday, February 23rd, Sean McShane cheated death while skiing. One of his bindings randomly popped, and as a result he slid out of control over a 300 foot cliff at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, BC.

He shouldn't be with us today, but our big, bald miracle lives. This picture was taken shortly after he was given some much needed quick-acting pain meds!

He was airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital where he underwent preliminary surgery. His wife, Jess is by his side ensuring he’s getting the care he needs. He is looking, sounding and feeling better each day but still dealing with significant pain. Sean's left hip is fractured at the acetabulum and ischium, and his right tibia & fibula are shattered at his ankle. You can Google for a fun anatomy 101. The hip will be left to heal on its own, but it will be 6 weeks minimum before he can try to bear weight on it. That’s before the ankle comes into the picture.

The ankle: there is an external fixation or 'ex-fix' (pins + rods) stabilizing it while the swelling goes down. Once swelling subsides, Sean will need to have a second surgery. It will be 3 month with no weight bearing on that leg post surgery.

An accepting physician has been secured at Health Sciences North in Sudbury and a bed made available in Orthopaedics. The family has confirmation for air medi-transport direct to Sudbury, and it IS covered by insurance! Additional/uninsured costs to be determined.

Arranging these logistics has been an absolute nightmare; the social work team at Kelowna General responsible for coordination repatriation has lied, sat on their hands, and resorted to blaming each other for inefficiencies and delays. This process has proven how broken (or non-existent) our healthcare system is, and how stretched our healthcare workers are across the board.

The McShanes are blessed to have so much support in their communities! Friends and family near and far have reached out and stepped up. For that they are endlessly grateful.

Now it’s time to get Sean and Jess home so they can be with their three kids who miss them dearly. We have been bombarded with friends and family asking how they can help, and we are now reaching back with a streamlined way that everyone can chip in a little to help share the load. (~Remember, he is a large man, so the load is kind of heavy).

Any donations received above and beyond what is needed will be donated to charity.

To keep up to speed on their progress, please join the Facebook Group Jess has created for this purpose called The Sean Show.

And please don’t hesitate to reach out to us (Suzanne Halet, Matt McShane and Elizabeth Priebe) with questions or directly to Jess with well wishes.

Sincerely the McShane Support team!
