My brother, Sean Herd, was tragically killed by a drunk driver as he drove home on Friday, August 2nd. Sean was driving home from the last day of band camp at Loris High School. He spent his last Friday playing the music he loved on his trumpet among his great friends in the Loris Marching Band.
Having attended La Plata High School his freshman year and Loris High School his remaining two years, Sean's love of music has touched nearly 400 miles of the east coast. From marching to jazz, Sean was always itching to play any piece he could get his hands on. At home, we often heard his trumpet late at night as he tried to hit a high note he had been practicing, or ran through a new challenging piece that caught his attention.
While our family and community is suffering the loss of the kindest brother, son, grandson, nephew, and friend we've ever known, we hope to use this moment to continue Sean's dream. Anything you can contribute to help us establish an annual scholarship to support students at both La Plata and Loris High Schools who eat, breathe, and sleep music in pursuing higher education is appreciated.
Sean's friends described his personality as "bubbly, charismatic, and goofy." Others couldn't help but notice that "he just always smiled." It is my sincerest hope that my brother's legacy will be marked with the same charity and selflessness that he lived his 17 years on this earth with.
Our family appreciates your love and support.
With love,
Ian Herd
