On November 25, 2006, Sean Bell and a couple of his friends were leaving his Bachelor Party to prepare for his Wedding later that day. A plainclothed NYPD officer approached Sean Bell’s car with his gun out, and without announcing himself. As Sean tried to get away, NYPD officers shot at the car 50 times, killing Sean and injuring his two friends. 3 out of the 5 officers who shot at the car were indicted, but then later acquitted of all charges.
In December 2009, the New York City Council voted to designate a stretch of a street in Queens in honor of Sean, 'Sean Bell Way.' A local artist then created a jaw-dropping mural where family, friends, and the community gathered to honor and uplift Sean. Unfortunately, the mural is no longer there because new management knocked down the wall, without notifying the family.
It is important for New Yorkers to remember the legacy of Sean Bell, and a mural is a beautiful and powerful way of sharing his story. We are on a mission to raise money to create a bigger and better mural!
