In Memory of Sean and Kevin Currivan

Donation protected
A shocking and tragic loss of two brothers, three days apart, in separate incidents.

On Tuesday, January 16, Kevin, 46, had a seizure and a fall at his home. He was found unconscious and unresponsive by a friend who called EMS. He was life-flighted to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston from Milford Hospital. The neurologists informed the family that he had a severe brain bleed and surgery was not an option. Testing showed there was no brain activity and, therefore, no hope that he would ever wake up. Kevin’s family honored his wish to donate his organs to save someone else and their family from the unremitting pain and total devastation of the loss of a loved one. He remained hospitalized, in ICU, and on a ventilator for seven more days. He was taken off of life support once they found recipients for his organs to be donated.

Kevin passed away with his family and close friends at his bedside while one of his favorite songs “Helpless” by Neil Young was playing.

On Friday, three days after Kevin’s fall, his brother Sean, 54, also had a fatal fall. He was found on the ground outside his house by his other brother, Brad. Brad was closing the family business for the day which is located next door to Sean’s house. As Brad was about to leave he heard Sean’s dog barking incessantly which alerted him that something was wrong. He thought Sean had forgotten to let him in and it was cold out. Brad turned his truck to shine the headlights on Sean’s door and saw his brother lying on the ground. Brad called 911 and performed CPR until EMS arrived. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Milford Hospital from a head injury.

The Currivan family are strong advocates of organ donation as Sean had been awaiting a transplant for the last five years.

Kevin and Sean’s deaths have given others a chance at a full life. Kevin’s organs were successfully transplanted into two women, one in her forties and the other in her thirties. Unfortunately, Sean’s organs could not be gifted because in order for a transplant to be successful the organs have to be harvested quickly after death, but his corneas and other tissue were retained. Sean had given the gift of sight to a young man.

The family is devastated and in disbelief over the loss of these two gregarious and caring people. We are hoping to help them with the funeral costs for their family and friends.

Neither Sean nor Kevin were ever married. They are survived by their mother, Paula, sister, Karen, brother, Brad, his wife Lisa, nieces Kayla and Ashley and Nephew Shane.
