My name is Emmalee, and I am raising money to to attend the SeaMester Program...
What is SeaMester?
SeaMester is a study abroad program designed to provide students with once in a lifetime experiences that expand global awareness, educate them about the ocean, and teach them how to be a crewmember aboard a sailing vessel. There is no typical day on board with the SeaMester sailing program. Students wake up every morning given new tasks to handle as a crewmember, new experiences in different parts of the world and sights of marine life up close and in the wild. Not only does SeaMester strive to educate its students about marine ecosystems, the ocean and seamanship, but it also challenges its students every step of the way with the goal of forming well-rounded, whole individuals with the attitude that they can handle any obstacle in life. SeaMester guides students through learning opportunities with the perspective that it is not the destination that matters most, but rather the journey.

Why is SeaMester different from other study abroad programs?
SeaMester is the ONLY study abroad that allows students to gain college credits whiling living aboard a sailing vessel for an ENTIRE semester. SeaMester students gain academic credit in the studies of Marine Biology, Oceanography, Nautical Science and Leadership Development in an environment that gives them HANDS ON experience with marine life, the ocean and sailing that requires them to grow their leadership qualities. This program immerses its students 100% by emphasizing sailing, not just as a sport but also as a LIFESTYLE.

“The only difference between knowing and understanding,
is your own experience”
In contrast to other study abroad programs, if living aboard a ship for a semester weren’t unique enough, it also is extremely selective in its applicants due to its rigorous and challenging environment. SeaMester is a program that requires dedicated, hard working students that can each serve as a helpful crewmember. This program is anything but comfortable and easy. Everyday with new sights and cool experiences, comes a great deal of responsibility and REAL work that it took to achieve that opportunity.

Sailing a ship across the Atlantic Ocean, from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean is not only dangerous, but requires a team each individuals giving 110% of their efforts. While this program offers many luxuries and experiences that are unparalleled, it also requires many sacrifices and much hard work that isn’t luxurious.

What are the real world applications of SeaMester?
Yes, students get to travel the world and engage in fun activities such as hiking, taking tours and scuba diving, BUT they also gain awareness to environmental concerns and learn how to better protect the ocean and its underwater ecosystems. SeaMester pushes students to learn how to better protect the earth, cohabitate with all walks of life and form more contentious individuals. In contrast to the students time at sea, while on land students engage in community service that gives back to others and help create a better world around them.

Students also receive Sailing certifications and Scuba diving certifications that they can build off of in the future.

Why do I want to do this program? Why should you fund it?
I have an extreme passion for sailing, as well as travelling. Although, there are many ways to adventure, and I want to adventure with a purpose. SeaMester would be an amazing experience that will challenge me and help me grow as an individual. It will also allow me to gain more than a fundamental understanding of the ocean, seamanship, and marine life that I hope to build off of in the future. I want sailing to be a part of my lifestyle and I feel that learning about marine life, the ocean and other parts of the world is the first step in knowing how to protect it. My goal is to soak up as much knowledge as I can in the pursuit of protecting marine life and conserving the earth. My ambition is to become a worldwide traveler and sailor. And my purpose is in my travels to leave the world a much better place than I found it.

Putting it in perspective…
Between family support, student loans, and money I’ve earned myself, I have deposited down $18,500 towards SeaMester and have 8,500 left to make! I’ve applied to the TSA scholarship and I am waiting to hear back if they will award a sum or not. In addition, I am working very hard in my own job to continue making more money, in which I usually clock overtime each week. Having said that, any money that people want to donate is GREATLY appreciated! Even 1$ helps! If anyone wants to contact me about other ways to donate, feel free to message me through Facebook, call, or text. Thank you so much:)
* Funds will be withdrawn from gofundme into my personal bank account and then wired to the Seamester program.
