Sea Turtle Nest Rescue Vehicle

A NEST RESCUE VEHICLE is desperately needed! In order to save sea turtles, An ATV is needed to relocate the nests from the 30 kilometer stretch of beach. Please donate!

 

Tortugueros Las Playitas  operates with a permit issued by SEMARNAT (Mexico's EPA) to protect nesting females, relocate their nests to a safe incubation greenhouse, and release and protect sea turtle hatchlings.

This is our 12th year in operation and we have released over 100,000 hatchlings since 2010.  This year 80 nests have been protected so far including one critically endangered Leatherback nest, three  endangered Black Sea Turtle nests and 76 Olive Ridley nests.

 

Tortugueros Las Playitas operates the World's only Sea Turtle Incubation Greenhouse. The greenhouse elevates the cool winter sand to ideal temperatures for sea turtle incubation. Without the Incubation Greenhouse, Leatherback nests in this region fail to incubate or produce very few hatchlings. The Incubation Greenhouse stabilizes temperatures and successgully incubates the nests inside. The technology used in the Greenhouse also allows us to closely monitor temperatures and balance gender ratios of nests.

 

It is IMPERATIVE that the nests are relocated to the safety of the greenhouse and in order to do that A NEST RESCUE VEHICLE is needed! The current ATV that has been used for the last several years on the beach has been breaking down. A NEW ATV is desperately needed in order to carry out this important mission!
