Sea turtle conservation project needs your help!

We are RASCAREY - a small, independent project that works in the conservation of sea turtles and the environment. Since the beginning in 2020, the NGO has faced many challenges and difficulties due to the project being in its beginning stages, as well as the pandemic. Despite the difficult circumstances, we managed to liberate 7,600 baby turtles in 2020 and more than 13,000 in 2021!
Currently, we are in the preparation for turtle nesting season (June 2022 - January 2023) and urgently need help to be able to finance material and equipment for the coming season.
Your donations go towards:
- Equipment for sea turtle nesting season 2022 (rubber gloves, notebooks, headlamps, backpacks, garbage bags, ponchos, machetes, shovels, pails for transfer of baby turtles, material for maintenance of nursery, etc.)
- Maintenance of the house and turtle hatchery (old metal roof (cost: 1000$) and broken fridge (cost: 600$) need urgent replacement, paint, kitchen utensils, light bulbs, wood, etc.)
- Improvement of the campsite (bedding for volunteers, shelving, water filter, curtains, etc.)
- Funding the salary of our local staff
Who are we?
RASCAREY was founded in 2020 by Esteban and his partner. Esteban is a Costa Rican who was born and raised in this area and he has dedicated more than 15 years of his life to help with the protection of Costa Ricans different sea turtle species. Besides Esteban's passion for the protection of sea turtles, he is passionate about living a sustainable lifestyle - connected to nature & the animals. With RASCAREY he wants to pursue his mission to make an impact on the declining rates of sea turtle populations and inspire people to live a more conscious and harmonious lifestyle.
Our beautiful home base is considered as one of the most remote, untouched and biodiverse regions of Costa Rica. But this also comes with many challenges, as access to resources is rather difficult. Bringing necessary material to the camp requires a long trip to the next town, which is a 2.5 hours drive away. We are continuously working on our campsite to improve volunteer accommodations, but this still requires a lot of development. One of our biggest goals this year is to be able to replace the very old metal roof, which is falling apart.
What do we do?
- Nightly beach patrols to search for nesting turtles
- Monitoring and maintaining turtle nursery
- Release of baby turtles
- Data collection for scientific purposes
- Weakly beach clean ups
- Working with natural materials
- Planting and cultivation of local plants
- Educational activities to connect people to conservation efforts and sustainable living practices
The main focus of our work is to conduct beach patrols during the night. There we locate turtle nests and collect & transfer the eggs to our turtle hatchery. Our hatchery provides a safe and clean nursing site, where hatchlings (baby turtles) have a high chance of survival.
Turtles are facing numerous threats and worldwide six of the seven sea turtle species are classified as threatened or endangered.
An example of the various dangers they face are:
- Poaching: sea turtles and their eggs are killed by people for food and for other products such as oil, leather and shell
- Climate change: loss of nesting beaches due to sea level rise; increase in nesting beach temperatures, impacts the gender of sea turtles which leads to an imbalance and impacts genetic diversity negatively
- Predators and domesticated animals eating the eggs
- Illegal vehicular activity that crushes the eggs
- Boat activity: hundreds of sea turtles are injured due to boat strikes every year
- Fisheries: incidental capture in fishing gear (bycatch)
- Pollution: they get entangled in ghost nets & stuck in floating debris or ingest plastic bags as they are often mistaken for jellyfish
- Habitat destruction: habitats are degraded and destroyed by coastal development (on the shore, but also on the seafloor)
With our work we want to go against biodiversity and habitat loss caused by manmade destruction and climate change. By means of our volunteer program, we seek to inspire people to protect our animals and plants on Earth. We want to share our knowledge about sea turtle conservation and sustainable living practices to (re)connect people to nature.
Why do we need your help?
Since the beginning, we have had to face many challenges and changes. Due to the pandemic, we have been put in a position whereby we had to use our personal savings to continue with our sea turtle conservation project.
Due to the unique and remote location of Rascarey, it requires a lot of effort for humans to live somewhat comfortably here. Necessary trips to gather supplies/goods are very time consuming and costly. We constantly have to maintain our infrastructures due to the humidity from the ocean and the buildup from jungle lifeforms. Also, because of the salty ocean air, things corrode faster than usual.
Right now we are in urgent need of help to finance material for the maintenance and improvement of the campsite. Also, to start this years’ turtle nesting season, we are in need of new equipment as well as funding to be able to pay the salaries of our local staff.
We are very eager to continue growing our project to protect sea turtles and the environment in this area and hence fulfill our mission to preserve this special place and it’s biodiversity!

Desde sus inicios en 2020, la ONG ha enfrentado muchos desafíos y dificultades debido a que el proyecto se encuentra en sus etapas iniciales, así como a la pandemia. A pesar de las difíciles circunstancias, logramos liberar a 7,600 crías de tortuga en el primer año y más de 13,000 en 2021!
Actualmente, nos encontramos en la preparación para la temporada de anidación de tortugas (junio 2022 - enero 2023) y necesitamos urgentemente ayuda para poder financiar material y equipo para la próxima temporada.
Tus donaciones se destinan a:
- Equipo para temporada de anidación de tortugas marinas (guantes de goma, cuadernos, linternas frontales, mochilas, bolsas de basura, ponchos, machetes, palas, baldes para traslado de crías de tortugas, material para mantenimiento de vivero, etc.)
- Mantenimiento de la casa y el criadero de tortugas (el techo de metal viejo (cost:1000$) y el refrigerador roto (cost: 600$) necesitan reemplazo urgente, pintura, utensilios de cocina, bombillas, madera, etc.)
- Mejora del camping (ropa de cama para voluntarios, estanterías, filtro de agua, cortinas, etc.)
- Financiando el salario de nuestro personal local
¿Quienes somos?
RASCAREY fue fundada en 2020 por Esteban y su compañera. Esteban es un costarricense que nació y se crió en esta zona, y él ha dedicado más de 15 años de su vida a ayudar con la protección de las diferentes especies de tortugas marinas de Costa Rica. Además de la pasión de Esteban por la protección de las tortugas marinas, le apasiona llevar un estilo de vida sostenible, conectado con la naturaleza y los animales. Con RASCAREY el quiere continuar con su misión de tener un impacto en las tasas de disminución de las poblaciones de tortugas marinas e inspirar a las personas a vivir un estilo de vida más consciente y armonioso.
Nuestra hermosa base de operaciones es considerada como una de las regiones más remotas, vírgenes y biodiversas de Costa Rica. Pero esto también conlleva muchos desafíos, ya que el acceso a los recursos es bastante difícil. Llevar el material necesario al campamento requiere un largo viaje hasta el siguiente pueblo, que es un trayecto de 2,5. horas de distancia. Trabajamos continuamente en nuestro campamento para mejorar el alojamiento de los voluntarios, pero esto aún requiere mucho desarrollo. Uno de nuestros mayores objetivos este año es poder reemplazar el techo de metal muy viejo, que se está cayendo a pedazos.
Qué hacemos?
- Patrullas nocturnas en la playa para buscar tortugas anidando
- Monitoreo y mantenimiento del vivero de tortugas
- Liberación de tortugas bebé
- Recopilación de datos con fines científicos
- Limpiezas de playa cada semana
- Trabajando con materiales naturales
- Plantación y cultivo de plantas locales
- Actividades educativas para conectar a las personas con los esfuerzos de conservación y las prácticas de vida sostenible.
El enfoque principal de nuestro trabajo es realizar patrullas de playa durante la noche. Allí ubicamos nidos de tortugas y recolectamos y transferimos los huevos a nuestro criadero de tortugas. Nuestro criadero proporciona un sitio de lactancia seguro y limpio, donde las crías (tortugas bebés) tienen una alta probabilidad de supervivencia.
Las tortugas se enfrentan a numerosas amenazas y, en todo el mundo, seis de las siete especies de tortugas marinas están clasificadas como amenazadas o en peligro de extinción.
Un ejemplo de los diversos peligros a los que se enfrentan son:
- Caza furtiva: las personas matan las tortugas marinas y sus huevos para obtener alimentos y otros productos como aceite, cuero y caparazón.
- Cambio climático: pérdida de playas de anidación debido al aumento del nivel del mar; aumento de la temperatura de la playa de anidación, afecta el género de las tortugas marinas, lo que conduce a un desequilibrio e impacta negativamente en la diversidad genética
- Depredadores y animales domesticados que se comen los huevos
- Actividad vehicular ilegal que tritura los huevos
- Actividad de botes: cientos de tortugas marinas resultan heridas por choques de botes cada año
- Pesca: captura incidental en artes de pesca (captura incidental)
- Contaminación: se enredan en redes fantasma y se atascan en escombros flotantes o ingieren bolsas de plástico, ya que a menudo se confunden con medusas.
- Destrucción del hábitat: los hábitats son degradados y destruidos por el desarrollo costero (en la costa, pero también en el lecho marino)
Con nuestro trabajo queremos ir en contra de la pérdida de biodiversidad y hábitat causada por la destrucción provocada por el hombre y el cambio climático. A través de nuestro programa de voluntariado, buscamos inspirar a las personas a proteger nuestros animales y plantas en la Tierra. Queremos compartir nuestro conocimiento sobre las prácticas de conservación de las tortugas marinas y la vida sostenible para (re)conectar a las personas con la naturaleza.
¿Por qué necesitamos su ayuda?
Desde el principio, hemos tenido que enfrentar muchos desafíos y cambios. Debido a la pandemia, nos hemos visto en una posición en la que tuvimos que usar nuestros ahorros personales para continuar con nuestro proyecto de conservación de tortugas marinas.
Debido a la ubicación única y remota de Rascarey, se requiere mucho esfuerzo para que los humanos vivan cómodamente aquí. Los viajes necesarios para recolectar suministros/bienes consumen mucho tiempo y son costosos. Constantemente tenemos que mantener nuestras infraestructuras debido a la humedad del océano y la acumulación de formas de vida de la jungla. Además, debido al aire salado del océano, las cosas se corroen más rápido de lo normal.
Ahora mismo necesitamos urgentemente ayuda para financiar material para el mantenimiento y mejora del camping. Además, para comenzar la temporada de anidación de tortugas de este año, necesitamos nuevos equipos y fondos para poder pagar los salarios de nuestro personal local.
Estamos muy entusiasmados por seguir haciendo crecer nuestro proyecto para proteger a las tortugas marinas y el medio ambiente en esta área y, por lo tanto, cumplir con nuestra misión de preservar este lugar especial y su biodiversidad!
