Katie is an 11 yr old, 14 pound Rescue Schnauzer mix adopted from Open Arms Animal Rescue 2 years ago. She was brutally attacked by a large breed dog while walking with her mom at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, IN on June 7th around 10am. She and her mom walk daily together per Dr's orders for her mom and Katie loves it! Katie was on a leash and reports say the offending dog was also on a leash when it picked Katie up in the middle of her body and started shaking. That's when the owner let go. Katie was rushed to a vet in Cedar Lake, then transported to the emergency vet in Highland then to save her life, transported to Med Vet in Chicago, IL. Katie had a blood transfusion, has been on Fentynl for pain, is on a feeding tube and in an oxygen tank to help her breathing. She is a fighter as none of the vets thought she would make it through the first night but now Katie needs surgery on 5 of her 8 broken ribs on one side of her little body. The specialists believe it will be more detrimental to let her heal with her ribs not lined up than to do surgery now.The vet bills are over $8,000 so far and this is putting a financial burden on her family as it is costing $1,500 day for round the clock care. The Lake County Police Dept can do nothing as there are no laws for dog on dog attacks. This leaves no recourse but to obtain a lawyer for more money and this does nothing for the vet bills that continue to pile up. Katie is a fighter, she wants to go home. She had such a rough life before finding her way into Rescue and then finally getting the life she deserved only to have this brutal tragedy happen to her. Total care for her is estimated to be around $20,000. This is if God and prayers continue to work and she won't need additional surgeries.
Please help us help Katie get back home. Some people might say "It's just a dog" but this little girl is special and she is a fighter and has beaten all the odds so far and didn't deserve any of this! Any amount will help her vet care. It will ONLY be used for her vet care. This family is emotionally and financially drained at this point and together we can help!
