The people of Cozumel, including Luis and his crew and their families, have been ordered to stay at home and the ports have been closed since March 15. It now appears that they will be under quarantine until June 1st making it almost 80 days without being able to work. It will likely be several more months before scuba divers start coming back and September through November is historically the low season for island visitors.
While Luis has continued to pay his captain (Marino) and scuba instructor (Omar) their full-time salaries, social security and health insurance, regular business expenses continue to come in, too. Unfortunately, due to numerous port-closures due to winter weather coupled with the mid-March shut down of all tourism and tourist-related businesses has left Luis in a really tough spot having burned through almost $6500 in saving and with very little resources to continue for even a few more weeks.
Mexico isn't going to offer any kind of financial support or bailout for citizens or small businesses to keep them on their feet. Luis says the he is most concerned about the well-being of his team and that he is able to start booking trips as soon as the government will allow. Otherwise his last alternative might be to sell his boat.
Luis and his team were really hoping that they could get themselves and their families through this Cover-19 virus and the complete shutdown of tourism and income without outside help. Conditions are difficult for so many people right now around the world that they didn't want to have to ask anyone else who may also be suffering for help. He fought us hard to go to GoFundMe, but right now the future is uncertain and unclear.
Whether you have dove with Luis once or for 25 years, we are all a part of the ScubaLuis family, so with that we're asking for any help you can provide.
All funds will go directly to Luis, Omar and Marino and their families to support them through this quarantine and total loss of business now and into the near future. If we are able to meet or exceed our funding goal, then Luis will be able to recoup some of his lost savings and offer help to his seasonal part time staff, too.
If you are unable to contribute financially right now, we completely understand. A positive review on Tripadvisor would also go a long way to showing your support to Luis and helps him with future business.
