Scouts Sailing Race - Guernsey to Poole 2024
Gorsemoor Scout Group (formerly 1st Ferndown, 1st Heatherlands & 1st Longham groups) based in Ferndown, Dorset, has a long-standing commitment to nurturing the personal and leadership development of our Scouts through outdoor adventures and challenges. Our upcoming endeavor, the Association of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO) Small Ships Passage Race from Guernsey to Poole from 10th to 17th August 2024, presents an extraordinary opportunity for our scouts to engage in a unique and transformative experience. It is a prestigious yachting race that will mark the 200th anniversary of the RNLI aims to bring a range of Sail Training vessels together for their crews of young people to compete, socialise and rise to the challenge of sailing these exciting ships.
Participating in the ASTO Small Ships Passage Race is not just about navigating the waters; it is about fostering resilience, teamwork, and a spirit of adventure among our young Scouts. This race will test their seamanship skills onboard a former 60ft racing yacht that has circumnavigated the globe 4 times. Scouts will be responsible for all elements of sailing, cooking, and cleaning. It will promote camaraderie, and instill a profound sense of accomplishment as they navigate the challenges of the open sea.
However, organizing such an expedition requires substantial financial resources, particularly for vessel charter and travel. The costs are £650/person with 10 from our Scout Troop taking part. It is here that we humbly seek your support. Your generous contribution would support the logistical expenses associated with the race and ensure that this opportunity remains accessible to members of our Scout Troop, regardless of their financial background.
By investing in our Scouts, you are investing in the future leaders of our communities. The skills and values they cultivate through experiences like the Small Ships Passage Race will not only serve them well in their personal journeys but will also contribute positively to the fabric of society as they grow into responsible and compassionate citizens.
Many of our Scouts have been training very hard for this opportunity, which can be seen in this video.
