Scott's Story: A Tribute to Saint Agnes
Donation protected
It's that time of year again, and HCC Softball is proud to continue our fundraising efforts for Strikeout Cancer. Last year, we raised over $24,000 to support a local mom in need! As a fourth-year program, we’ve been fortunate to win the Strikeout Cancer initiative every year—an achievement we’re proud to hold across all of NJCAA. Our goal this year is to continue that tradition and surpass our fundraising target.
This year, we are honoring Scott Thomas (who worked at Howard Community College for 23 years!) whose life was saved by the care he received at Saint Agnes Cancer Institute. In his honor, Scott has requested that all funds raised be donated to this incredible institution, which he credits with saving his life. Please see what Scott had to say:
"I’ve been married to my darling wife Michele for 51 years. We have 2 beautiful daughters, great son-in-laws and 6 wonderful grandchildren who are all local.
I spent 6 years in the United States Air Force after graduating high school. I had a 24-year career as a Baltimore City Police Officer, 11 of which were spent in the elite motorcycle unit escorting presidents and VIPs throughout the city. After retiring from the city, I worked as a Computer Solutions Manager in the Technology Services Division at Howard Community College where I retired after 23-years.
I was 6 months into enjoying my second retirement when an x-ray revealed a 7 cm. cancerous tumor in the upper lobe of my right lung. After treatment at another oncology center, our daughter recommended we get a second opinion at Ascension Saint Agnes Cancer Institute, as she had a friend being treated there. After speaking to the doctor, we realized that Saint Agnes was where we belonged. I had 6 rounds of chemotherapy, 35 rounds of radiation along with iron infusions. I was also deeply touched by all the staff, from doctors, assistants, social workers, dieticians and others who were always friendly. My questions were always addressed, whether I was onsite or home. I felt like home there. I’m currently in complete remission 2 years after being diagnosed. I would highly recommend Saint Agnes Cancer Institute to anyone dealing with this disease. I firmly believe my life has been extended by their care."
Sincerely,
Scott M. Thomas
We hope you'll join us in this important cause and help us make a difference once again!
