Scott's Fight: Stage 4 Cancer
Donation protected
Hey everyone, I'm Savana Woods. I am raising money for my dad, Scott Leaf. Last spring my dad landed himself in the ER for multiple tests that doctors confirmed was Pneumonia and was told he really needed to follow up with his family doctor. Weeks went by and he still didn't get any better with medication so he scheduled the appointment with his doctor only to receive the dreaded news that he had lung cancer. We met with an oncologist at Blessings hospital in Quincy where we were informed that the cancer had already started to spread and was considered Stage 4 small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer can be treated, but will always come back. In June he received his port and first round of Chemo and immunotherapy. After many cycles and scans, we were told the Chemo wasn't working and there was a different one to try. After Cycles of this different chemo, again, we were told bad news. It wasn't working. After meeting with multiple doctors including Oncologist, palliative care, and the pulmonologist, he was left with 3 choices. Another round of chemo that the oncologist told us wouldn't work so it was a waste of time, a new chemo at a bigger hospital that could kill him instantly, or enjoy what time he has left and call hospice. He was given 1-6 months to live at this appointment. We took time to do some research and reach out to a couple bigger hospitals. Mayo clinic wanted $5,000 down payment just to schedule an appointment and City of Hope (Chicago) charged $500 just to view his records and tell him "Sorry we cannot help". This all came directly out of his bank account because neither place accepts medicaid.
During the last appointment he was told that he can no longer work due to broken ribs. He loved his job and the people he worked with, but it also didn't offer life insurance or health insurance. A couple weeks ago our whole family was able to enjoy much needed family time to reminisce. We were also able to start planning the inevitable. All funds collected will help with medical supplies, services (when the time comes) and everyday needs so he can enjoy the time he has left.
