I am humbled to say, “I need your help”. My story is a tale of plain simple life. The cards I was dealt were not the best… but I did the best I could with the cards I was dealt. I was six years of age in the summer of 1969, when I suffered traumatic injuries to my spinal cord and head, including four broken ribs that punctured a lung and a broken collar bone and neck from a vehicle-pedestrian accident. I was in a coma for eight-teen days with a fever of 107.6 degrees. I was given up for dead by many doctors, while other doctors said, “if I did live my brain would be fried from the high temperature and I'd be brain dead the rest of my life." But miraculously, I came out of the coma and spent almost three years at the University of Missouri Medical Center. After three years of rehabilitation, I would go on to walk for 30 years with the use of forearm crutches. I have endured four brain surgeries, four throat surgeries, six feet surgeries and other assorted orthopedic surgeries…in total, I have endured thirty-three surgeries. In 2000, the time had come for me to stop walking because I just couldn’t do it anymore. My body did not respond to the brain messages that were sent to make my legs work anymore. Time had its way with me… and I was forced to become dependent on an electric wheelchair for my mobility. In 2004, I was diagnosed at the University of Arizona Medical Center with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome; which is a rare painful nerve disorder. I thought I knew what pain was until this nerve pain ravaged my body and continues to do so on a daily basis. It is truly the most painful thing I have ever experienced.
Living in Arizona with my new found mobility I was able to get a van with equipment to make it feasible to not only have mobility but transportation too. But with a van and equipment needed came great expense of keeping my wheelchair and wheelchair lift, not to mention the van itself in good working order to have some sort of transportation to get me to and from doctors’ appointments, and such. And now, I have recently found out news that could potentially leave me home-bound for the rest of my life. United Access in Kansas City, who has always done the work on my wheelchair lift and other equipment on my van recently informed me that I needed a new wheelchair lift and door openers. United Access informed me that a lift has about a ten year lifespan...and my wheelchair lift on my van has just about reached that age. However, I feel confident in saying, “this will be the last lift I will buy in this lifetime”. But I am far too young to live the rest of my life inside these four walls of the house I rent. Unfortunately, there is no gov’t help or insurance to help me with my problem of paying for this equipment. I need to find a solution to pay for this equipment and to fix the transportation problems I now face. I need your help to do so. Thank you!
