Scott Wells Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Many of you know Scott Wells from her years of working for ECU Advancement as she helped ECU raise money for critical needs for academics and athletics. Now she needs our help.

On Monday, February 13 at 4:22 pm, Scott was hit by a car while walking in uptown Greenville. She was rushed to ECU Health Medical Center where she had critical cervical (neck) spinal surgery to repair fractured vertebrae in C5 and C6. Surgeons put a metal plate and four screws in to repair the vertebrae and take the pressure off the nerves in her spine. Scott spent the next 106 days in ICU battling in her recovery. On the 106th day of her recovery, Scott was moved to rehabilitation where she has learned how to drive a power wheelchair and strengthen key muscles.

Scott has always been an active, fun loving, adventurous woman and she continues to recover from this horrific accident which has left her with limited mobility. She has limited use of her left arm, is unable to walk, or do the daily activities she loves. Scott continues to need the assistance of a ventilator overnight to help her breathe and keep her lungs clear and oxygenated. When she is off the vent during the day, she is able to speak by using a speech-aided valve that attaches to her tracheostomy tube. It is anticipated that she will be released after three weeks of rehabilitation and will continue to have home therapy to gain additional skills or mobility.

Scott will need around the clock care for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, these types of accidents don’t mean that all care expenses are covered. Many of Scott’s friends have helped with food for the family and sitting with Scott while hospitalized to keep her alert, mentally active and engaged. Her family and friends are forever grateful for this love and support.

Now that we better understand the home healthcare and financial needs as Scott transitions home, her friends are starting a Go Fund Me to ease the burden of care for Scott. Her immediate needs, that are not covered by insurance, include a mobility chair specifically designed for her to use with her left arm, a medically customized van to transport her to appointments, a home generator that would enable her to continue the required medical devices in the event of a power outage, and assistance with required home healthcare with specialized and licensed healthcare providers. Please consider helping and share this with others who may be interested. We are grateful for consideration and all gifts.
