Scott's Traumatic Brain and Body Rehab
Hello friends, family and extended network. A friend of mine is in great need of assistance. I am hoping you can join me in helping them with their medical, financial and emotional needs right now.
I'm starting this GoFundMe for my friends Tiffany and Scott. I am so inspired by the power of their love and how it has played a key role in Scott's healing.
On Wednesday, May 6, Scott was attempting to rescue their cat, Stella, who was stuck on the roof of their building. Scott had a misstep and fell. He landed on the concrete on his head, sustaining the following injuries: Massive brain hemorrhage, skull fracture, severe trauma to his right eye, broke bones in left scapula, right tailbone, right pelvis, 8 out of 12 ribs on his right side, orbital fracture, jaw fracture, sinus fracture, cheekbone fracture, left wrist and right wrist (open fracture).
As you can imagine from the list. He is lucky to be alive.
After emergency surgery to release the pressure on his brain, Scott was admitted to the ICU. This was the last time Tiffany and Scott were able to see each other.
Scott's injuries were catastrophic, and the prognosis was grim. The next day, he underwent a craniotomy to repair the massive brain bleeds and fix both of his wrists. He remained in the ICU, on a ventilator, and heavily sedated.
Throughout this time, Tiffany's only link to Scott was through FaceTime. Even though he wasn't responsive, Tiffany called every morning and every evening to sit with him. She'd read him stories, tell him about their favorite memories and do whatever she could to help him swim through the fog of his brain damage.
Scott defied the odds every step of the way. He started to move his limbs, came off the ventilator, was responding to simple commands such as "wiggle your toes." Each small win propelled Tiffany forward and she never wavered in her belief that he will make a full recovery.
After 2 weeks, Scott was moved out of the ICU to the Trauma Acute Care Unit. Here he continued to improve - much to the amazement of the doctors and nurses. He was alert, responding to commands and even started to speak.
Tiffany was told to be prepared for Scott to be in the hospital and rehab for up to a year and half. She refused to accept this.
As it turns out, Scott was only in the hospital for a total of 30 days. For someone who had suffered the amount of injuries he had, this was a very short time.
On June 5, Scott was transferred to acute rehab to work on putting the pieces back together. Now the real work begins.
Acute rehab provides Scott the best chance at recovery and for regaining independence. The average stay for someone with a TBI is 15 days, but they expect Scott to be there longer due to his injuries. Acute rehab is $2,000 per day.
Tiffany and Scott are anticipating many yet-to-be identified expenses as a result of this injury. He is still unable to see out of his right eye. He may require additional surgeries as he heals. And this is why I'm asking for your help.
I hope you can read in their story the emotional and financial impact they are feeling. I hope you can find it in your heart to help my friends in need. I know with COVID-19, the social unrest, and so many other issues that you’re likely feeling pulled in many directions. Together, if we can “pay-it-forward” to someone in need that has a connection to us, no matter how many degrees separated, I think we can truly impact their lives.
No matter what the amount. Please give if you can now.
Thanks in advance,
Don
