Help me take Emily's Ashes to Scotland
With the holidays coming up and my 24th birthday around the corner, I have decided it is time for this fundraiser. Instead of a Christmas or birthday gift, I’m asking you, my friends, family, and potential donors, to help send me to Europe to lay my sister’s ashes at Sterling Castle.
My sister, Emily Hobson, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 24, just weeks before my high school graduation. We had spent years planning a special sister graduation trip to Europe – this trip, so long in the making, was cancelled so that she could start chemotherapy treatments immediately.
In 2010 Emily went into remission and was able to give me the greatest gift: she took me to her favorite place on the earth, Scotland. While our time there was much too short, the trip changed my life forever. We ate, drank, and laughed our way through Scotland, Paris, and London, and I made some of the best memories I have of Emily on that trip. Neither of us knew that when we returned home she would have to continue chemotherapy for the duration of her life. We always dreamed of going back when she was better, and taking our parents with us. I still have that dream.
In the picture for this campaign, Emily was sitting in the grass atop Sterling Castle. She was crying because she wasn’t sure she was going to survive long enough to take me back to Scotland when she got sick. But she did. She shared with me the magic of Scotland and our ancestry and gave me the gift of traveling. Before she died, she asked me to take some of her ashes back to Scotland so that a part of her could always be there. We talked about going back to Europe and the fun we would have in Edinburgh and Paris.
Just before my sister passed, her nurse explained to us that we would each need to let her know that it was okay for her to leave us and pass away peacefully. We needed to reassure her that we would be alright after she was gone. I told her it was okay to let go, that I wanted her to visualize the rolling hills of Scotland that we both loved so much. I wanted her to leave the pain of her bed, go to Edinburgh, and visit the graveyard we loved so much. The last thing I said was that I would meet her at Sterling Castle.
It’s time for me to keep my promise. I know how short and precious life is, how fleeting it can be. Emily was not afraid of death in the end, but sad she could no longer live. I want to honor her memory and begin the next chapter of my life’s journey by checking an item off of our bucket list. But most importantly I want to meet my sister in Scotland like I promised.
Please know that every cent earned will go towards this trip in her memory. Everyone who donates will be part of the live travel blog which will include pictures, video, the sprinkling of her ashes, and all important stops along the Emily Tour. My beautiful sister Emily gave me so many gifts, so I will spend this trip doing all of the things we talked about doing, and I know I will make her proud.
Thank You.
